Clown News
Korn Patch Klowns held their 6th annual “Clowns at the
Carousel” event on Sunday, August 3rd, 2008 in Des Moines, Iowa.
This event has quickly become known as being held on the Hottest day of the
summer. Temperatures in Iowa reached a steamy 95 degrees with a heat index of
108. That did not keep 25 clowns from coming out in full costume to do what they
do best. Entertain - bringing laughter and smiles to all in attendance.
This particular park in Des Moines is home to a beautiful Carousel (Heritage
Carousel) which is why we originally chose it to host our party.
Thanks to numerous sponsors this year we were able to provide:
- Free Carousel Rides
- Free Inflatable Rides
- Free Hot Dogs, Popcorn, and Drink
- Free Entertainment on the Showmotion Stage
- Free visit to Safety Street which included
numerous interactive displays for health and safety. This year we were able
to fit and give away 400 bike helmets compliments of Greater Des Moines Safe
Kids Coalition.
We had 4,000 red foam clown noses to share with our
guests.
The final 30 minutes of our day, Everything shuts down and families are lead to
the stage area where the Korn Patch Klowns present a 30 minute clown production.
The clowns adore the opportunity to perform on stage and bring smiles to a hot
and tired crowd.
This year in the week prior to National Clown Week, because of this event we
were able to secure 3 “in studio” television interviews and 3 photos plus event
mention in the Des Moines Register and numerous radio announcements. We also
accepted a proclamation from the Mayor of Des Moines during the City Council
meeting declaring it to be National Clown Week.
Since we have chaired this event since its inception, it was important to us for
it to have educational value. After all, we’re hosting a completely Free event
in an older neighborhood park with a diverse ethnic population. I think we have
a captive audience so we created “Safety Street.” Safety Street it a parking lot
that runs in the middle of the park so kids cross through it throughout the
event to get from one fun thing to another. This year our Safety Street
participants included:
- American Red Cross – Hygiene Promotion
- Animal Rescue League – Pet Safety
- Army Corp of Engineers – Water Safety
- Crime Stoppers – Crime Prevention
- Des Moines Fire Department – Fire Safet
- Employee & Family Resources – Drug Abuse
Prevention
- Everybody Wins – Literacy and Mentoring Program
- Farmer’s Insurance Group – Child ID Kits
- Fire Safety House – Blank Children’s Hospital –
Fire Safety
- Greater Des Moines Safe Kids Bike Safety (Fitted,
educated, and gave away 400 bike helmets!)
- Iowa Department of Public Health – General Health
Information
- Iowa State Patrol – Trooper Bear
- Kids In Cars – Education on NOT Leaving Children
in Cars
- Mercy Oral Health – Dental Hygiene
- National Guard Drug Demand Reduction Unit – Drug
Free Button Making
- Polk County Health Department – Hiking Related
Game
